History of AMH

History of Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking

Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking (AMH) has been an institution of the Alaska climbing and skiing community since opening its doors on April 1, 1974 in the heart of Spenard. Founded and run by Paul Denkewalter AMH has grown from the original split store front to the take over the entire location. After an expansion of our back shop and upstairs, the shop grew in to the size that many are familiar with today. A rework of Spenard Road by the city in 2017 gave us our front lawn, and completed the current look of AMH.

In 2018, long time employee and hard goods purchaser, Jason Buttrick along with his wife Britta Sonerholm purchased the shop. Since the purchase took place, AMH has continued on the mission of serving all manner of outdoor enthusiasts in the Alaska community.

Generations of Alaskans have been equipped and employed by AMH. But The Shop isn't only a retail store, there is a long history of supporting local organizations such as Nordis Ski Association of Anchorage, Mountaineering Club of Alaska, the Climbing Access Fund and many others.

Staffed by dedicated climbers, skiers, packrafters and hikers, AMH strives to provide customers with the best gear and advice possible to hit the fixed line, slope, crag, river, trail and beyond with confidence. Thanks for visiting our online shop. We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have and look forward to helping you get prepared for your adventure.
