The most versatile packraft in Alpacka's lineup, the Expedition is fully adaptable to a multi-week Alaskan traverse, van life in New Zealand, or lapping the local whitewater run. Read more..
Spray Skirts Sold Separately For All Decked Models in 2025
The Expedition is a one boat quiver killer. Its adaptable performance allows for seamless transitions between backcountry traverses, traditional multi-day river trips, weekend getaways, and whitewater laps with friends. No other packraft offers a greater range of potential adventures.
The Expedition features a mid-volume hull with a center panel stern and moderately rockered bow, which optimizes tracking, speed, and performance across the broadest range of river conditions from flatwater to lightwater to whitewater. A backband and lace-in seat perfectly balance comfort, performance, and packability. Keep the build as light as possible, or add the optional patented 3-point thigh straps and whitewater footbrace for better performance in lightwater and whitewater.
The Expedition is only available in a Whitewater Deck or Removable Deck configuration. Alpacka recommends the Gnarwhal for similar uses and performance in a Self Bailer.
The Expedition receives only minor changes for 2025.
The main difference between the 2024 and 2025 models is versatility and intended uses. The 2024 model was the flagship versatile and performance wilderness packraft. Instead, they offered the Classic for the more budget oriented and casual adventure packrafter. The Classic has been discontinued for 2025 because they felt that the Expedition offered better performance for people buying decked Classics and the Caribou could offer better performance for people buying open Classics.
The 2025 Expedition is offered without thigh straps for similar pricing as the 2024 Classic, or with thigh straps for similar performance and lower pricing than the 2024 Expedition. They think that's a win for everyone.
The standard Whitewater Deck is the driest and warmest configuration for the Expedition. It is ideal for colder water and cool climates. The Whitewater Deck features a large kayak style cockpit and one-piece PEX spray skirt rim (Spray skirts sold separately). This build has attachments for 3-point thigh straps and a WW Footbrace, which can be purchased separately.
This build adds the patented 3-Point thigh straps and WW footbrace to the Whitewater Deck build. This is the preferred configuration for lightwater and whitewater adventures. The 3-point thigh straps and WW Footbrace are compatible with all builds and can be added later if you purchase the basic Whitewater Deck build.
The Removable Deck features the same cockpit as the standard Whitewater Deck, but with a perimeter zipper for converting to an open boat for more relaxing days. The Removable Deck maximizes versatility for the broadest range of paddling conditions, but is not as dry in lightwater and whitewater as the Whitewater Deck. This build has attachments for 3-point thigh straps and a WW Footbrace, which can be purchased separately.
This build adds the patented 3-Point thigh straps and WW footbrace to the Removable Deck build. They recommend this for maximum versatility from warm days on the lake to cold days in whitewater. The 3-point thigh straps and WW Footbrace are compatible with all builds and can be added later if you purchase the basic Removable Deck build.
The innovative Cargo Fly internal storage system comes standard on the Expedition. The Cargo Fly features an airtight zipper installed in the stern of the boat to allow you to store your gear inside the tubes. The system provides drier and more secure gear storage and improved paddling performance due to a lower center of gravity.
Internal Dry Bags may be purchased separately and are designed to work with the Cargo Fly system. The bags clip in place along each side of the tubes with a side release buckle and allow for better organization and weight balance than placing the contents of your pack loose inside the Cargo Fly. They also act as additional balanced air chambers to make it easier to get to shore in the event of a puncture.
With multiple sizes, the Expedition will fit most paddlers up to 230lbs. Larger paddlers should consider the Gnarwhal. Cargo weight recommendations are 20-40lbs for maximum whitewater performance, up to 60lbs for general purpose, and up to 100lbs for extended trips on larger rivers.

*The Expedition is designed for a true to size fit with enough knee bend to engage the thigh straps, but keep your legs more extended for better downriver performance. If you are in between sizes, the smaller size will generally provide more positive thigh strap engagement.
