We see
a lot of charts about the proper pole height based on height. Doesn't work.
Here in Alaska we tend to cut out poles longer than reccomended. We know many
good skiers who like them shorter. If you are skiing very hilly courses most
of the time you may want a shorter pole. Longer on flat courses.
The other
problem with charts is they do not take into account the proportional variations
in people's bodies. It is kind of a lazy way to do things. If you know what
length you prefer - great - just tell us we will make it so. If not read on.
For skate
poles we ussually cut them to the height of the upper lip. If you are on hilly
courses, shorter is fine (even on our hilly courses we ussually cut them to
the upper lip). If you have a coach as him what he prefers.
For classic
poles measure to your armpit and add a couple of centimeters. This will really
work pretty well in all conditions.
